一九八一年夏，吴冠中返故乡宜兴写生。他在宜兴郊外见桑林苇塘，因忆白居易诗「厚地植桑麻」引起其画兴，笔下遂有速写〈故乡〉。后又移作彩墨，写成本幅。本幅约写成于八十年代初期，仅钤印，未署款，直待九十年代，才由画家补署。

图中半植桑林，半绕苇草，池塘静躺其间，祗见彩叶浮荡，鸭子悠然游掠而过，白墻黑瓦的江南民居，隐约散布于后。画家笔下描划的正是「半亩方塘一鉴开，天光云影共徘徊」，静谧安和而生机勃发的环境，无疑是对乡情的惦念，亦如「源头活水」般从中激发其源源不絶的创作意念。"Note:" the mulberry garden in my hometown, the reed pond in my hometown, and the house of my aunt and uncle are similar in my memory." - wu guanzhong
